I am thinking about getting my associates in accounting. Does anyone know a reputable online school for this type of degree? Also, do employers think negatively about an online degree vs. going to college?
There is a huge difference between an “online university” and a brick and mortar school. These “online universities” (like University of Phoenix, AIU, Capella, etc.) are disreputable, and applications listing degrees from these institutions find themselves at the bottom of the pile. I actually know a Human Resource manager at a Fortune 500 company who throws them away.
If you must study online, you must definitely do it the smart way — through a reputable brick and mortar school that offers distance education. Many state universities are now doing this. The University of Iowa, the University of Maryland, and Penn State University all come to mind.

Degrees through these fine schools will be much more respected than any piece of paper issued by AIU or Phoenix. Earning these degrees will also likely be much cheaper!

How much math background in actually needed in an accounting career?
I’m an English major, considering changing to an accounting major. I just figured that English majors don’t really lead to any career that pays well. Everyone I know that is in accounting is wealthy, and I was wondering about the career. For example, is math really used daily (hard core math. stuff that can’t be done on a calculator)? Is it boring? etc etc. Any insight into the career would be well-appreciated.
In my experience, no, very little high-level math is done. It’s more about figuring out what accounts the numbers should go to, not what the numbers are, so to speak.
There are lots of opportunities in accounting. You could work for a firm and do corporate taxes or audits. You could work for a small local office and work with local businesses. You could work for a corporation and handle their day-to-day accounting. You could specialize in a certain area or industry. There’s lots more than most people realize.
