Working as an Accounts Clerk Assistant: What type of training will I be getting?

And if i wanted to later on work as an accountant, what training will I be given by the company to become an accountant?

I would say it depends on the type of role that you complete in your company. An accounts clerk usually has a very specific job role with very specific duties. It does not involve in qualitative decision making and if any decision making is to come your way right now it would probably be framed by specific criterion and guidelines, meaning you wont have to evaluate pros and cons or anything like that.

If your starting from a specific function like payments or collections or HR etc. You should try to gain the best possible exposure in that and then move to a different function within six months or so like HR or Payables. Adequacy depends on your ability to grasp things quickly. If all goes well, in two years you will be ready for an assistant accountant position. Its best if you can supplement this with academic performance.

Need advise on obtaining bachelors in accounting thru online courses.?

I obtained an associates degree from a business school 25 years ago. I’ve been working 25 years as an accountant and am successful and make good money. I’m at a standstill though because I never received a bachelors in accounting. I’d like to obtain credits toward a bachelors by taking online courses. Will my credits from years ago be transferable? What about my job experience…will that get me some credits? How do I go about getting a degree from a college that will give me a “real” bachelors degree? I would only be interested in online courses due to my busy work schedule. Are these online degrees legit? Any info would be helpful!

Some schools are, the best thing to do is contact a local school. There’s one in my area and you can get your bachelors degree in accounting from them. This school is sort of connected if you want to call it that, where if I chose to go there they would accept the credits and courses from the school I received my Associates from. I would thing that it would not matter how long ago you received the credits, but some places do not accept credits from just anywhere. Job experience only gaines you points in job hunting not school credit.
Your local schools are the best places to get your education from because these national school advertised on TV are way more expensive.

i do plan one day to be able to travel internationally for business trips, but thats only hopes and dreams. i have 2 yrs of hs french experience and have some background in spanish and korean.

For me I would continue with French since you already have 2 years of high school French. You will need to know French if you ever want to work in Quebec, France, or even Switzerland. I am a retired auditor and can read French but not speak it. If you continue in French you could pick up a French accounting book so you can be familiar with accounting terms. Is it possible to get a BS in Accounting without taking all of the regular “General Education” courses?

I’m wondering if I can get a Bachelor degree in Accounting, but bypassing all of the general courses (english, history, science, etc)

No, you can’t “bypass” these courses.

Some colleges require more GenEd classes than other colleges, so pick a college that puts less emphasis on GenEd and more on technical and career-specific training.

Or, you could CLEP these courses if you already know the material. A CLEP exam proves you know the material so you get credit for the course and don’t have to take it, if you pass the CLEP test.

Perhaps some kind of technical college may have more focus on the accounting curriculum. But remember, an “interdisciplinary” focus (learning diversely about many subjects) will provide you a solid background for further studies and life/work in general. You won’t ONLY be doing accounting-related stuff 24/7 your whole life. And math IS A science, so not studying science is not an option anyways. Also everyone needs to know how to write efficiently (you’ll have to deal with clients/superiors/etc, and written communication is a necessity). Everything has a purpose.

other jobs I can do with an accounting degree?

I am almost graduating with an accounting degree. But I don’t enjoy accounting and terrify of long work hours. What other jobs can I do with an accounting degree besides being an accountant?

An accounting degree gives you a lot of flexibility in choosing jobs. You could try a brokerage firm for a job as financial analyst, or apply with consulting firms. However, it might be best to get a job with a CPA firm and stay with it for a couple of years, because the experience enables you to move to a more advanced position very quickly. For example, you could get a job with a consulting firm and work up to level 3 in two years. Or you could get 2 years experience with a big 4 CPA firm then move to the same consulting firm to a level 5 or 6 position.

And if you think only accounting firms have long hours, you may be disappointed. Any job you take will be demanding if you want to succeed at it.

Finally, you might try graduate school and get an MBA. That will enable you to move into any area of business and advance to CEO.

I have an associate degree in microcomputers. Is this adequate to begin a bachelor in accounting?

I am interested in obtaining a bachelor’s degree in accounting. I had several general education courses and some accounting courses while earning my associate in microcomputers. I am wondering if I have to start over and earn an associate in accounting first, as I am starting a new field of study.

you will probably be able to earn a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2-3 years if most of your credits transfer….that depends on what school you go to. Some school won’t transfer certain credits. You should ask the school you are planning on going to if they accept the credits from your previous school.

What is the best way to reconcile accounts payable or any other balance sheet account?

Trying to reconcile balance sheet accounts at month end.

As the last person Excel is a good start, here’s how I would reconcile A/P, A/R, Cash, Debt (relatively easy accounts to reconcile).

You need to set up a rollforward table in excel at the top of spreadsheet (Row 1) list the following titles for your columns,
Beginning Balance, increases (i.e. what caused this account to increase), decreases (i.e. what caused this account to decrease), ending balance (this should be the month end balance you are reconciling to). Note: Fancier titles may be used.
In the columns under the titles you’ve just listed in row A you can list your various accounts (Column A), the increase catalysts in Column B (cash receipts, increase in A/R, A/P, or new debt, etc.), Column C the cause for account decreases (cash outflows, decrease in A/R b/c of cash receipts, decrease in A/P or debt b/c of cash payments). Column D should be the formula
=A+B-C.

Remember to keep invoices/receipts (to keep track of cash payments, increase in A/P etc.) or what was sent to customers to help keep track of A/R) and bank statements (to help track increase in cash, debt payments, etc.) to help you provide proof of what caused the increases and decreases.

How does accrual accounting contrast it with cash basis accounting?

To put it as simply as possible, accrual accounting adds income as it’s accrued (earned) Cash basis doesn’t add income until it is actually received.

If a company gives a customer a product that they will actually pay for later, the income is entered into their accounting ledger even though payment has not yet been received. This is accrual accounting. It has the advantage of tracking upcoming expenses and income for better future planning.

In Cash Basis all accounting is done strictly on the actual movement of cash or cash value in an account. It is simpler and does not recognize promises to pay or debts owed as either expenses or income.
